DR Who is the longest running Sci-Fi programme of all time. And as long as it continues to run, that title cannot be taken away either.

The main reason that DR Who is still going strong after almost 50 years and will continue to do so is because the format is so open and easy. With a Time-Travel Space Ship and an almost-immortal time-lord with 13 regenerations (allowing for the main actor to change when needed), you can pretty much accomplish any story in any time in any place! It really is that simple and that brilliant.

When the BBC first launched the programme in 1963 they could not have known how wise they were to leave the origins and details so open and vague, allowing for such a long and fantastic evolution of the programme over generations.

Compared to many Sci-Fi programmes today, DR Who is in a different league. Whereas programmes like Star Trek are relatively contained in their structure and as such usually have to resort to re-desigining previous story-lines, DR Who can just keep going in different places, times and even genres without risking any damage to the original format and feel of the show.

In a recent poll, one American site ranked DR Who as 8th out of 50 Sci-Fi shows and classed "Battlestar Galactica" as No.1. Do me a favour. It may be very popular right now and I'll even accept it has a stronger following in its prime, but compared to the longevity, surrealism, imagination and downright continuity of DR Who it has absolutely nothing.

The Doctor rocks! I've never missed an episode since the Sci-Fi channel started airing it.. I thought Christopher Eccelsson did a pretty decent job but David Tennant outshines and outacts him in every way.. Tennant has managed to create a character that, no matter how much he surrounds himself with his friends, exudes a deep lonliness and arouses a great deal of sympathy from his audience.. I sincerely hope he stays on as the Doctor for many years to come (although this is doubtful).. I've read that the series is only going to produce a limited number of specials for 2009 (4, I believe) and won't be back for a full season until 2010.. I'm not sure why, but then again, I'm not sure why the Sci-Fi Channel feels they can only produce and show 5-6 episodes of ANY of their series before going into reruns.. Does anyone remember when a series used to last from Sept. til May or June before going on hiatus? Sigh, those were the good old days of TV.. ^^

My name is Angie, and I have been watching DR. Who for as long as I can remember. I started watching the original series when I was just a little kid, and I watched it every weekend on PBS. The new series has all the great enemies, all new companions, and, of course, the beloved savior of all time and space, The Great Doctor! The new series is so much more than the original, in that it has so much more special effects, but I have to tell u, the emotions are the same watching then and now! The Dr. Who series is still one of the best damn shows on TV, and I don't care who u r or what u watch!!!!!!!!!!

Being such a Tech savvy nation, the true fans in the US are simply downloading the episodes hours after they air. I have yet to see a full episode on Scifi.
